Santa Maria and San Giorgio Lakes

The Santa Maria and San Giorgio Lakes, located between the municipalities of Revine Lago and Tarzo, are proof of an ancient glacial lake formed by one of the branches of the Piave glacier during the ice ages. These lakes, which have been frequented since the Neolithic period, are a perfect destination for those who love nature and history. The northern part of the original basin extended as far as the moraine near Gay (Cison di Valmarino), but, due to its shallowness, much of it turned into marshland or was reclaimed already in prehistoric and Roman times.

The Valsana: a historical crossroads between ancient castles and barbarian invasions

The Valsana played a key role as a place of transit during the Roman period, as can be seen by the remains of the castles of Monte Frascon, Castegna Maor and Sald del Casin in Revine. The presence of the military road Claudia Augusta Altinate and the majestic Castle of Cison di Valmarino (known today as Castelbrando) are proof of the strategic importance of this area. Unfortunately, during the barbaric invasions, both the villages in the valley and the buildings along the Roman roads were devastated.

A natural paradise between marshy areas and peat bogs

The Santa Maria and San Giorgio Lakes are well-known for their rich natural environment, characterised by large areas of marshland and peat bogs that provide a habitat for many species of flora and fauna. The Soligo River, a left bank tributary of the Piave River, flows from the Santa Maria Lake, further contributing to the biodiversity of the area.

The municipalities of Revine Lago and Tarzo have created several public parks, including the “Va dee femene” area, located in Colmaggiore di Tarzo on the southern side of the Santa Maria Lake. This place, which used to be a meeting point for the village washerwomen, now offers a pleasant walk among the reeds along the banks of the lake. Near the isthmus between the two lakes, it is possible to visit the remains of a pile-dwelling village in the Livelet Educational Archaeological Park, an unmissable attraction for archaeology and ancient history enthusiasts.

How to reach the Revine Lago Lakes

The Revino Lago Lakes can be easily reached: simply exit the Mestre-Belluno motorway at Vittorio Veneto Nord and follow the signs for Follina, Cison di Valmarino and Castelbrando. This fascinating place is ideal for a trip dedicated to nature, history and relaxation, as it offers breathtaking views and a number of outdoor activities.
