Brent de l'Art:
the natural canyon between history, geology and beauty

“Brent de l’Art” is an extraordinary canyon-like natural conformation located in Valbelluna, in the Veneto region. 23km away from our apartment complex. The word “Brent” comes from the local dialect and indicates a stream flowing at the bottom of a deep and narrow valley, while “Art” comes from “Artus“, which means rocky gorge. This natural phenomenon is the result of thousands of years of erosion by water, which has shaped layers of rock that formed millions of years ago.

The Brent de l’Art formation was created by the erosive action of debris carried by water. During periods of heavy rain, the stream swells, so its speed increases and it carries stones and plants. Once this debris enters the canyon, it creates eddies that hit against the walls, carving out the rock and continuing towards the valley. This natural process has created a unique geology, with artistically shaped rock walls.

The typical red colour of the Brent de l’Art is due to the presence of the “Cretaceous Red Flake“, a rock that formed during the Upper Cretaceous, between 90 and 65 millions of years ago. This material, made up of carbonate mud deposits and fossil shells of planktonic foraminifera, can be easily eroded, but still maintains good vertical stability. The walls of the Brent reveal brick-red limestone-marly layers, due to the presence of iron oxides, alternated with lighter layers and layers characterised by shades of red and greenish-grey clays.

It is estimated that the most significant erosion of the Brent de l’Art lasted between 10,000 and 15,000 years, coinciding with the thaw after the end of the Würm Glaciation, which ended around 9,000-10,000 BC. This phenomenon still occurs today, but not as much.

When visiting the Brent de l’Art, you can see almost spherical stones which, carried by the current, swirl around and shape the rock as if they were expert sculptors. Moreover, the sound of the water that flows through these narrow valleys is significantly amplified, offering a unique sound experience compared to more open valleys.

Visit Brent de l’Art for a journey through time that reveals the Earth’s geological history, to admire a breathtaking natural landscape characterised by red rocks and walls sculpted by the water. This site is an extraordinary example of how nature can create works of art of inestimable beauty with patience and strength.

Santa Maria and San Giorgio Lakes

The Santa Maria and San Giorgio Lakes, located between the municipalities of Revine Lago and Tarzo, are proof of an ancient glacial lake formed by one of the branches of the Piave glacier during the ice ages. These lakes, which have been frequented since the Neolithic period, are a perfect destination for those who love nature and history. The northern part of the original basin extended as far as the moraine near Gay (Cison di Valmarino), but, due to its shallowness, much of it turned into marshland or was reclaimed already in prehistoric and Roman times.

The Valsana: a historical crossroads between ancient castles and barbarian invasions

The Valsana played a key role as a place of transit during the Roman period, as can be seen by the remains of the castles of Monte Frascon, Castegna Maor and Sald del Casin in Revine. The presence of the military road Claudia Augusta Altinate and the majestic Castle of Cison di Valmarino (known today as Castelbrando) are proof of the strategic importance of this area. Unfortunately, during the barbaric invasions, both the villages in the valley and the buildings along the Roman roads were devastated.

A natural paradise between marshy areas and peat bogs

The Santa Maria and San Giorgio Lakes are well-known for their rich natural environment, characterised by large areas of marshland and peat bogs that provide a habitat for many species of flora and fauna. The Soligo River, a left bank tributary of the Piave River, flows from the Santa Maria Lake, further contributing to the biodiversity of the area.

The municipalities of Revine Lago and Tarzo have created several public parks, including the “Va dee femene” area, located in Colmaggiore di Tarzo on the southern side of the Santa Maria Lake. This place, which used to be a meeting point for the village washerwomen, now offers a pleasant walk among the reeds along the banks of the lake. Near the isthmus between the two lakes, it is possible to visit the remains of a pile-dwelling village in the Livelet Educational Archaeological Park, an unmissable attraction for archaeology and ancient history enthusiasts.

How to reach the Revine Lago Lakes

The Revino Lago Lakes can be easily reached: simply exit the Mestre-Belluno motorway at Vittorio Veneto Nord and follow the signs for Follina, Cison di Valmarino and Castelbrando. This fascinating place is ideal for a trip dedicated to nature, history and relaxation, as it offers breathtaking views and a number of outdoor activities.

Santa Croce Lake: nature, sport and relaxation in the heart of the Veneto region

The Santa Croce Lake, located in the province of Belluno, 17km away from our apartment complex, is the largest natural lake in the Veneto region. The lake formed as a result of a landslide that blocked the Piave River and it is located in the Alpago area, between Farra d’Alpago, Puos d’Alpago and Ponte nelle Alpi. With its crystal-clear water, the lake reflects the Alpago Mountains and Nevegal, and the surrounding towns preserve the traditional architecture of the typical houses with stone roofs and marsh reeds.

Birdwatching at the Sbarai Oasis: The Sbarai Oasis, an extended wetland along the banks of the lake, is an important naturalistic site ideal for birdwatching. With over 30 metres of variegated environment, it is home to many bird species, among which the little Grebe, the Lapwing and the Grey Heron. The oasis can be reached via a flat path, also offering the opportunity to observe specimens of white willows.

Baia delle Sirene: Icthyogenic Centre: At Baia delle Sirene, on the southern side of the lake, is the Icthyogenic Experimental Centre of Farra d’Alpago. This centre is dedicated to the redevelopment of the area and to the production of valuable fish species such as whitefish, pike and trout. The Centre, made of wood and concrete with large windows, also offers educational activities to raise awareness among children of the lake’s biodiversity.

Sport and Relaxation at the Santa Croce Lake: The lake is an ideal place for water sports such as windsurfing, kite surfing and sailing, thanks to its windy climate. The well-equipped beaches are the ideal place to relax, have picnics and swim in the crystal-clear water. Visitors can also have fun playing beach volley and football and children can enjoy the playground. During the year, the lake hosts regattas and windsurfing and triathlon championships.

Tour of the Santa Croce Lake: Discover the Santa Croce Lake with a 17.4km route starting from Papa Luciani Square in Puos d’Alpago. The tour passes through Farra d’Alpago, Pojatte, Santa Croce del Lago, La Secca and Bastia d’Alpago, offering spectacular views of the lake and its shores.

Visit the Santa Croce Lake for a complete experience between nature, sport and relaxation, and discover everything that this wonderful location in Veneto has to offer.
