Brent de l'Art:
the natural canyon between history, geology and beauty
“Brent de l’Art” is an extraordinary canyon-like natural conformation located in Valbelluna, in the Veneto region. 23km away from our apartment complex. The word “Brent” comes from the local dialect and indicates a stream flowing at the bottom of a deep and narrow valley, while “Art” comes from “Artus“, which means rocky gorge. This natural phenomenon is the result of thousands of years of erosion by water, which has shaped layers of rock that formed millions of years ago.
The Brent de l’Art formation was created by the erosive action of debris carried by water. During periods of heavy rain, the stream swells, so its speed increases and it carries stones and plants. Once this debris enters the canyon, it creates eddies that hit against the walls, carving out the rock and continuing towards the valley. This natural process has created a unique geology, with artistically shaped rock walls.
The typical red colour of the Brent de l’Art is due to the presence of the “Cretaceous Red Flake“, a rock that formed during the Upper Cretaceous, between 90 and 65 millions of years ago. This material, made up of carbonate mud deposits and fossil shells of planktonic foraminifera, can be easily eroded, but still maintains good vertical stability. The walls of the Brent reveal brick-red limestone-marly layers, due to the presence of iron oxides, alternated with lighter layers and layers characterised by shades of red and greenish-grey clays.
It is estimated that the most significant erosion of the Brent de l’Art lasted between 10,000 and 15,000 years, coinciding with the thaw after the end of the Würm Glaciation, which ended around 9,000-10,000 BC. This phenomenon still occurs today, but not as much.
When visiting the Brent de l’Art, you can see almost spherical stones which, carried by the current, swirl around and shape the rock as if they were expert sculptors. Moreover, the sound of the water that flows through these narrow valleys is significantly amplified, offering a unique sound experience compared to more open valleys.
Visit Brent de l’Art for a journey through time that reveals the Earth’s geological history, to admire a breathtaking natural landscape characterised by red rocks and walls sculpted by the water. This site is an extraordinary example of how nature can create works of art of inestimable beauty with patience and strength.
